Mecze fazy grupowej stanowią sól Mistrzostw Świata w piłce nożnej. Dzięki temu, że rywali znamy już na kilka miesięcy przed rozpoczęciem tego piłkarskiego święta, możemy przygotować się do meczy przeciwko nim, dajemy zajęcie prasie, która może ich analizować, a także zyskujemy okazję do transmitowania (i omawiania) samego losowania, co zawsze dostarcza nam sporych emocji. To bardzo piękny element mundialu, do którego przyzwyczaiły się miliony kibiców na całym świecie.
Trudno jednak nie zwrócić uwagi na mniej piękny aspekt fazy grupowej. Chodzi o kalkulacje, których dopuszczają się reprezentacje już po pierwszych meczach. Tak najprawdopodobniej było w grupie E, gdy po porażce Niemców z Japonią, Hiszpanie zaczeli kalkulować, że w wypadku gdy Japonia zajmie pierwsze miejsce, im bardziej opłaca się zająć drugą lokatę. Tym samym La Furia Roja wyeliminowała groźne Niemcy, ale też zadecydowała, że w meczu 1/8 finału spotka się z Marokiem, a nie z Chorwacją. Następnie (zakładając zwycięstwo) trafi zaś na zwycięzcę meczu Portugalia vs. Szwajcaria, a nie na Brazylię. Oczywiście, moglibyśmy uznać, że Japończycy byli po prostu lepsi od Hiszpanów, ale statystyki nie zostawiają złudzeń. Hiszpania po prostu nie chciała atakować rywali (a przynajmniej nie za mocno).
Gdyby jednak zmienić zasady turnieju i po fazie grupowej wprowadzić dodatkowe losowanie, które wyłaniałoby pary 1/8 finału to nie dość, że skończyłoby to niesportowe kalkulacje, ale też wyzwoliło dodatkowe emocje. Po 1/8 można wrócić do klasycznej „drabinki”. Wówczas nie będzie to miało znaczenia, bo pokonany i tak odpada z turnieju. Kalkulacje nie wchodzą więc w grę.
Szanowni Państwo, doskonale wiemy, że pewnych zachować z futbolu wyeliminować się nie da. Plotka mówi, że Argentyńczycy odpuścili Polakom w drugiej połowie spotkania, bo woleli aby to oni zajęli drugie miejsce w grupie, a nie nielubiany w Buenos Aires Meksyk. Czy rzeczywiście tak było? Tego już się nie dowiemy. Wiemy natomiast, że chcielibyśmy oglądać futbol pozbawiony wyrachowania i chłodnej kalkulacji. Interesuje nas sport i związane z nim emocje, dlatego apelujemy o wprowadzenie losowania par 1/8 finału tak jak ma to miejsce choćby w przypadku Ligi Mistrzów UEFA.

However, it’s hard not to pay attention to a less beautiful aspect of the group stage. It’s about the calculations committed by the national teams after the first matches. This was most likely the case in Group E, when after the Germans defeat to Japan, the Spaniards began to calculate that if Japan took first place, it would be more profitable for them to finish second. In this way, La Furia Roja eliminated dangerous Germany, but also decided that it would meet Morocco rather than Croatia in the 1/8 finals match. After that (assuming victory), they will meet winner of the Portugal vs. Switzerland match, rather than Brazil. Of course, we could consider that the Japanese were simply better than the Spaniards, but statistics leave no illusions. Spain didn’t want to attack their rivals (or at least attack not too hard).
However, if you decide to change the rules of the tournament and introduce an additional draw after the group stage, which would determine the pairs of the 1/8 finals, it would not only end the unsporting calculations, but also release additional excitement. After 1/8 you can return to the classic „single-elimination system”. Then it won’t matter, because the defeat team is out of the tournament anyway.
Ladies and gentlemen, we know very well that some behavior from soccer can not be eliminated. Rumor says that the Argentinians let the Poles off the hook in the second half of the match, because they preferred that the Poles take second place in the group, rather than Mexico, which is not like so much in Buenos Aires. Was that really the case? We’ll never know that. What we do know is that we would like to watch football devoid of calculations.
